Baking

A Cherished Activity For All

At Little Flamingo Academy Montessori, baking is a cherished activity that takes place once a month and is also included in our holiday programs. This hands-on activity offers children the chance to explore ingredients, follow recipes, and create delicious treats while learning valuable life skills. Baking allows children to engage their senses as they touch, smell, and taste various ingredients, which stimulates sensory development. Additionally, it fosters patience, as children wait for their creations to bake, and promotes responsibility as they clean up after the activity.

Practical Learning

In a Montessori environment, baking is particularly beneficial because it integrates many key areas of learning. For instance, mathematics plays a significant role in baking, as children measure ingredients, work with fractions, and count portions. Following a recipe involves sequencing and understanding the concept of time, which enhances cognitive development. By weighing ingredients and calculating quantities, children naturally improve their math skills in a practical, hands-on way. This makes baking not only a fun activity but also an educational one, deeply aligned with Montessori’s emphasis on learning through real-world experiences.

Benefits

Moreover, baking in a Montessori setting promotes independence and confidence.

Children take an active role in preparing and mixing ingredients, which allows them to practice decision-making and fine motor skills, such as pouring and stirring. As they see the tangible results of their efforts—a tray of cookies or muffins fresh from the oven—they experience a sense of accomplishment. This builds self-esteem and encourages them to take on more challenges. Through baking, Montessori learners also develop teamwork when they work in small groups, reinforcing social skills such as sharing and collaboration.
